Phone Photography Set Up

Hello! Welcome to Phone Photography for Products.

Today, I will explain how to set up a simple studio to photograph your products at home or in the office.

We will cover what’s required to create this setup, how much it will cost, How to set it up and, as a bonus, some angles and lighting tips to ensure you’re only going to show the best of your product.

 Let’s get into it.

Starting the equipment list:

  • Table or flat surface

  • Table lamp with bendable arm

  • White bristol board x 2

  • Tape

  • Phone Tripod

  • Product of your choice

Step 1 - Starting, we will pull a table against a wall. If you can get it next to a window, that will help.

Step 2 - Get out your white bristol board; you will tape one end to the wall, ensuring that half of the paper lies on the table. This will make a nice curve throughout the paper. The curve is called a seamless curve. This helps a lot when going for clean white background for your products.

Step 3 - Add the lamp and put it at the front of the table, pointing towards the centre of the paper.

Step 4 - Add in your product.

Step 5 - If you have a tripod, put your phone in the tripod and set it up so the camera is at eye level with the product. We want to ensure the camera stays still for the first few shots.

Step 6 - Take a photo of the product.

Step 7 - Take your second piece of bristol board and hold it up to the opposite side of the lamp. This will then reflect light back onto the product. Making the shadows less dramatic and causing more even lighting to your product. This is what we call a bounce light. You can also use tin foil, a mirror or white fabric. Note that white reflects light, and black absorbs it.

Step 8 - now that we have even lighting on our product, we will take another photo. See how it compares, then move the bounce around until you find the best lighting scenario. You can see in this demo here how much the light changes when the bounce is there compared to when it’s not.

Step 9 - Now that we have a few key shots, we can take the phone out of the tripod and move the angles around. This will allow us to photograph the product from its best angles.
